Periphrasis Definition - Glossary of Rhetorical Terms

In rhetoric  and  prose style, periphrasis is a roundabout way of saying  something:  the use of an unnecessarily lengthy expression in place of one thats more direct and concise. Periphrasis is a  type of  verbosity. Periphrasis (or circumlocution)  is commonly considered a stylistic vice. Adjective: periphrastic. Time, Aug. 10, 1953) Periphrasis in Euphemisms and the Grand Style Periphrasis occurs when a single word is replaced by several others to form a longer phrase that names the same thing: for instance, briny deep for ocean, or the manly art for boxing. . . . Its often used in euphemisms to speak around, and thus spare readers from any distasteful associations the more direct, single-word variant might trigger: little girls room for toilet, or passed on to greener pastures for died. Writers also use periphrasis to elevate their prose, to raise it from the informality of the low and middle styles to the formality of the high one, as in the following example, And those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. Southern Illinois University Press, 2010) Fowler on the Periphrastic Style The periphrastic style is hardly possible on any considerable scale without much use of abstract nouns such as basis, case, character, connexion, dearth, description, duration, framework, lack, nature, reference, regard, respect. The existence of abstract nouns is a proof that abstract thought has occurred; abstract thought is a mark of the civilized man, and so it has come about that periphrasis and civilization are by many held to be inseparable. These good people feel that there is an almost indecent nakedness, a reversion to barbarism, in saying No news is good news instead of The absence of intelligence is an indication of satisfactory developments. The war did not just come about overnight; it was a result of decades of tension in the United States over many different things. I am a 32 year old person passionate about food and aspiring to hone my cooking skills to become a professional chef. I have always loved cooking even as a child. When I was a child and barely able to see the eyes on a stove, I was given a stool by my grandmother and allowed to cook with her. Though I don’t come from a large family, cooking was something that we always did together. It was fascinating seeing their different styles of cooking. My grandmother had a more traditional southern comfort style of cooking such as preparing homemade souses and head cheese. My uncle, the chef, had a classical Italian approach to food as in preparing dishes such as spinach and sausage stuffed mastication with marinara sauce. My uncle, who cooked in the Navy, is excellent at grilling and barbecuing. With those three influences, I couldn’t help to develop a love for cooking. From the young age of 12, I was preparing full meals for my family and continue to do so today. I also enjoy the creative side of cooking how a one can take a blend of Ingredients ND combine them to make many different dishes exhibiting different flavors. I almost feel like a scientist sometimes in the kitchen creating meals for my family and friends. Most times the outcomes are good but I have had mishaps but that’s a part of the learning curve of cooking. When I am cooking, It’s a peaceful place for me. I feel a connection to the food I am preparing and I always like to hear feedback on the food I have prepared. This causes me to change or modify each dish to expand my knowledge and understanding of food. Food allows me to express myself and acts as creative outlet for my time and energy. It Is also a good medium to bring people together because all people regardless of race or creed enjoy good food which varies from culture to culture. It Is also Interesting seeing different people’s Interpretations of the same dishes, for Instance dressing or stuffing and all Its variances. Dressings are Like snowflakes with no two recipes being the same. As far as myself, If I had to categorize my style of cooking It would be comfort foods but I am always open to learning and perfecting other methods and dullness’s of cooking. I find that a lot of the dishes I prepare come from dishes I grew up eating and have made changes to making them my own recipes such as baking some dishes that were fried for me as a child. Food draws on memories and experiences of different people. It also can alter moods depending on those experiences such as apple pile reminding an Individual of being home with family sitting at Sunday dinner after church. When homemade biscuits are being made, It reminds me of good days with my great grandmother. We would make them every morning together when I was a child and Its one of the first hinges I was taught to cook by her. She also Introduced me to preparations of eggs and breakfast foods. Those were some of my fondest memories with her. We cooked together for years until she passed away. She Inspired greatly my love of preparing food. I have always received high praises for food I have prepared for friends and family. I always felt that cooking is omitting that I really enjoyed doing and doing by profession felt like a viable option. He was scheduled for a tour and invited to go along with. I toured the facility of Locale and was impressed and intrigued by what the program offered. I made the decision to enroll. While attending Locale, I intend to fully take advantage of the knowledge and experiences made available by instructors and fellow classmates. I have already learned a lot of things during the first phase such as basic knife skills and learning how to identify and make the five mother sauces and I look to learning even more skills necessary to become a successful chef. I have also learned to do away with a lot of bad practices when preparing food through the Serve Safe certification curriculum. I learned about things such as cross contamination and how to identify and properly handle TTS foods. My awareness of properly handling food in my home was raised during my education on the importance of food handling and preparation. I have also been exposed to different foods and ingredients that I have never used before and I have enjoyed experiencing them all some I like more than there. I am also learning to work closely with people because for years in the production industry, I worked alone with a machine and it’s a very different experience working alongside people bringing ideas together to create one dish. Though I have learned a lot, I know I have much more to learn and look forward to doing so. While in school, I plan to perfect my knife skills, learn to fabricate meat, work on alluding flavors, and creating complete composed dishes. I also plan to learn to cook cuisine outside of my comfort zone and so am really looking forward to the international cuisine phase and every class leading to that. I plan on focusing on each skill being taught as they all build upon each other to make a well rounded chef. I also appreciate the business side of culinary arts encompassing the financial and management aspects of running a kitchen and restaurant that I expect to learn. I am excited about the possibilities that this educational opportunity is promising to bring. Upon receiving my degree from Locale, my immediate goal is to find a Job at a restaurant under an established chef to gain professional cooking experience learning to hone and perfect signature dishes of my own that will appear on a menu. I am willing to start at the entry level and with hard work and commitment learn all that I can to advance my skill set to transition to the next level. I expect that there will be some difficulty but I anticipate overcoming them for the satisfaction of my intended goals. I also plan to travel and taste food from different areas to educate my allot and to try different kinds of foods from different areas. Once I have obtained professional cooking experience and have traveled experiencing different foods I am going to start a food truck. I have several ideas now about menu items but they are subject to change upon me growing as a culinary. I find food trucks fascinating because they have low overhead and require a few menu items but most executed extremely well. I also like the option of change of location related to perspective patrons. Along with that, I want to do some catering such as parties, weddings, arthritis, and other events. I would like to ultimately be the owner of my own diner matter where a patron is from he or she may be able to choose a dish that is reminiscent of home. I want to allow people to know me and about me through my food. I want my food to showcase my abilities and education which a point of pride for me. I never plan to stop learning about food and its possibilities. I even plan to learn how to use molecular gastronomy when preparing foods. I want to build a name and reputation as a great and respected chef and possibly teach after years of radar work and experiences. My commitment to professionalism and willingness to learn is the key in realizing my goals and aspirations in culinary art. In the interactions among these characters, he is simplifying the situation in Vietnam into a personal model to be viewed. Graham Greene developed the attitudes and personalities of his characters almost to be a condensed legend of the countries they represented. In their actions, and opinions formed on them by others, was a reflection of the general feeling overall in Vietnam. Alden Pyle is the title quiet American sent to Vietnam with orders. Seemingly he is quiet because he is the innocent, neutral party coming to aid by selling plastic. He has a good reputation, and is very curt and proper. Na?ve is best to superficially describe his demeanor; he is only trying to help. But ignorance is probably better to this character for hedoes not realize the destruction he is causing and does not realize that he is more meddlesome than helpful. And that is exactly what Graham Greene istrying to portray this characters representation of the United States. Pyle as an individual reflects America as a whole as they were seen as ignorantly trying to interfere in Vietnam, being neutral. But actually harming in trying to help Pyle as a character and as the symbol of his country was portrayed of promising the Vietnamese things, trying to forge for them a new life they did not need nor understand. This is seen with his relationship with Phuong as he woos her away from Thoma s Fowler with promises of skyscrapers and the Statue of Liberty. Phuong, can be seen as the innocent country Vietnam whose promising lands pose the stage for a war between the politics of greedier forces. Phuong and the majority of Vietnam, the peasants, know nothing but their simple existence. They farm their rice paddies; they sustain themselves- that is all they know. No matter who wins the war, how will it affect most of thecountry? Will they not go back to doing the same thing they did the day before? And yet you have America coming in monitoring the war, aiding sides,imposing democracy. Very much just confusing the Vietnamese, and confusing the problems already present with promises that the Vietnamese dont quite comprehend. Such is the case with Pyle and Phuong. Pyle like America is distracting the Vietnamese with ideals that are not essential to them, like Phuong who is naively caught up with the grand notions of it all. Thomas Fowler is the main character in The Quiet American and he is the embodiment of his homeland, Great Britain in the story. Greene is portrayingEnglands views of the situation in Vietnam through the eyes of their representative, Fowler. Fowler is not very fond of Pyle and sees his actions as cold and cruel. And yet perhaps as England, he is trying to not get in to involved in emotions of the situation as he claims Phuong is needed by him as only a sexual object. He denounces God, and points out the ignorance in Pyle, yet he says, One has to take sides. If one is to remain human (174). So what side is Fowler on, though he claims he is just there to report the happenings of the war. Green may have pointed out some kind of dissention between England and the United States with the love triangle set up between the two and Phuong. Greene subtly and deftly intertwines the lives of his characters with their larger counterparts. Are they both trying to helpVietnam? Or are they simply medd ling in affairs that dont concern them. My Miracle Babby Essay On May 9, 2014 around 2 am, I woke up with extremely painful stomach cramps. I tried to use the bathroom, but nothing helped. I forced myself to lie back down. I was hoping lying flat on my stomach would help. Nothing helped, so that same morning I decided to skip work and go to see my doctor. I went to Sick Call located on Hanscom Air Force Base in Hanscom, MA. As I waited to be seen my stomach pain seemed to subside. When I was with the doctor I explained my symptoms and told how I felt (as far as my pain level). The doctor did some blood work and a urine test on me. I was told about 30 minutes later that I was pregnant. The first thing I asked the doctor was how that was possible since I currently had an IUD inside of me. I thought I could not get pregnant with one. I was instructed to go to the emergency room to have my IUD removed before it would cause further pain and the loss of my baby. ?As I drove to the hospital I started wondering how this was possible; how I could be pregnant. My OBGYN told me that the IUD was one of the most effective birth controls I could use. I knew we were not ready for another child. I had just gotten my promotion in the Army and was doing an amazing job as a recruiter. I became one the best Army Reserve recruiters in Boston since the previous year. I felt this pregnancy would be such a setback for me. I was also worried about my health and this baby’s health due to the fact I was still in pain. When I arrived in the emergency department it would be about two hours later before I would be admitted. Later I was probed with questions by the doctor and nurse and after a full examination, I was informed that my IUD would need to be removed and I would need an ultrasound to rule out possibilities of pre-term delivery, vaginal bleeding, clinical chorioamnioitis and placental abruption and an ectopic pregnancy. So just having these medical terms thrown at me with such grave and scary meanings to them. I started to cry as I laid on that hard cold hospital bed. I cried until they left the room. I decided it was time to call my husband and inform of this new development. My husband was at work when I called him, he told me he would come as soon as he could and to keep him informed of any updates and to stay calm so that everything would be alright. About an hour later I was taken to the ultrasound room. As I looked at monitor I saw little didn’t really understand what I was looking at and the technician wasn’t the nice, nor as she good at explaining anything. After being told that kind of information I was beside myself (and so was my husband). My doctor advised me personally to terminate the pregnancy, because later it could become even harmful to my health and wellbeing furthermore, there was a ninety percent chance I would lose both babies during the pregnancy. My husband and I were told to take some time and make a decision. We were given fact sheet about unborn babies with encephalocele and IUGR. I spent every available second I had researching and researching. I talked to my pastor, my parents and friends. I even went to support groups for mothers with children with encephalocele and other disorders. My husband told me one day that he didn’t want to have to raise two children with possible major disorders while he already had two girls with no kinds of problems. He agreed with the doctor (to have the pregnancy terminated). At eighteen weeks along I went back to my OB doctor and told him that I would be keeping my babies and deal with whatever circumstances occurred. He is such a wonderful little boy who has fought for his life every day. Each day he gets stronger (and more handsome). I love that boy with all that I have. I am grateful for my decision to keep the pregnancy and never giving up. Through my son I have learned what true strength means. It doesn’t always occur on the battlefield as I use to think. Strength comes from within, facing those tough life or death decisions, putting my life and health aside and caring for my unborn babies, as well as my two older girls. Christian continues to prove doctors wrong with every growth period, his CAT scans shows he no longer has any brain problem, his skull and brain are growing at a normal rate and size. He is meeting every mile stone he is suppose to (for his age). Christian keeps me grounded and I’m proud to be his mother, Christian is my hero. I know I made the right decision and would do again if I had too. My family feels so complete, I mourn the lost of my baby, Christina every day, but I know she is watching over us all.
